IX Summit Sydney 2022

August 24-26, 2022. China's Climate Growth Opportunity.

TECHNOLOGY, INVESTMENT & ACCELERATING PATHWAYS TO NET ZERO

GET YOUR FREE DIGITAL PASS

China’s pledge to achieve net zero emissions by 2060 has been welcomed across the world. However, with its energy consumption still rising, the innovation and technology investment required to achieve this goal will be staggering. Recent estimates range anywhere between $ 5 trillion to $ 16 trillion.

The complete transformation and decarbonisation of China’s cities and industries will be challenging, but this also provides an extraordinary opportunity for economic growth and prosperity.

China is already the world’s largest investor in renewable energy, electric vehicles and grid-scale battery storage. With the country’s huge economies of scale this has driven down costs of solar, wind and electric vehicles to become cheaper alternatives to fossil fuel competitors and made the transition to clean energy more viable.

Still, to achieve the net zero goal by 2060 or sooner, China must rapidly innovate, invest in and scale the technologies that can accelerate pathways for its major emitting sectors. Green hydrogen, carbon capture and usage and offshore wind to name a few.
